About Andrew Bearden Brown

Lauded by The Washington Post for his “pure” and “poignant” sound, ANDREW BEARDEN BROWN is a tenor equally at home on operatic and concert stages.

Upcoming operatic appearances include Ein Soldat in Der Kaiser von Atlantis with Teddy Abrams at Louisville Orchestra. He will also perform as Don Curzio & Don Basilio (cover) in Le nozze di Figaro under the baton of Harry Bicket, Street Vendor (cover) and chorus in La bohème, and chorus in Rigoletto, all as a member of the Apprentice Singer Program at The Santa Fe Opera.

2024/2025 season oratorio appearances include Coffee Cantata with Boston Baroque (debut), Handel’s Messiah at Duke University, Bach Magnificat at Brown University, and Britten canticles including Abraham & Isaac at Christ Church Savannah.

A recent graduate with a performance diploma from the Boston University Opera Institute, Andrew performed with the Opera Institute in Glass’s Hydrogen Jukebox (Tenor), Massenet’s Cendrillon (Le Prince Charmant), and Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito (Tito). In the 2023/2024 season, he also covered the role of John Singer Sargent in the world premiere of Damien Geter and Lila Palmer’s American Apollo with Des Moines Metro Opera as an Apprentice Artist. His solo concert appearances for the season included Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, Bach cantatas with Duke University Chapel and Ashmont Hill Chamber Music, and Handel’s Messiah with Ensemble Altera.

In the 2022/2023 season, Andrew performed with the Opera Institute in Rorem’s Our Town (Stage Manager), Adamo’s Little Women (Laurie), and Handel’s Alcina (Oronte). He also debuted with Opera Neo in Mozart’s Mitridate (Marzio) and Handel’s Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (Tempo - cover). Andrew’s solo concert appearances for the season included Handel’s Messiah with Tempesta di Mare, as well as with Ashmont Hill Chamber Music for Bach’s St. John Passion, in a performance praised by The Boston Musical Intelligencer as a “carefully balanced interpretation of the Evangelist with deep expression and gravitas.” 

Additional operatic highlights include with the Royal College of Music in Ravel’s L’heure espagnole (Torquemada) and with Felici Opera in Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Ferrando). As an oratorio soloist, Andrew has also performed with groups such as the Academy of Ancient Music & Voces8 (St. John Passion - solos), the Washington National Cathedral Choir (Elijah), and Boston Schola Cantorum (St. John Passion - Evangelist).

A singer equally dedicated to ensemble singing, Andrew appears on the rosters of Handel & Haydn Society, Washington Bach Consort, The Thirteen, Ensemble Altera, and the Choir of Washington National Cathedral.

A Washington, D.C. native, Andrew Bearden Brown received his early music education as a boy chorister at Washington National Cathedral, where he has sung for services of national importance, including the state funerals of Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, John McCain, Colin Powell, and Madeleine Albright. Later he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies from Brown University, as well as a master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the Royal College of Music in London. Andrew is also an alumnus of the American Bach Soloists Academy.

In 2023, he received Second Prize at the Handel Aria Competition, the William Grogan Award at the Oratorio Society of New York’s Lyndon Woodside Oratorio-Solo Competition, won the Boston University at Carnegie Hall Competition, and won the Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra Collegiate Vocal Competition.
